Fresh off our Green Seal certification, the aloft Portland is now the official hotel of the 2011 Better Living Show---the largest sustainable lifestyle show in the country!

We were recently named the 9th trendiest hotel in the world by TripAdvisor users, and a big part of that has been our eye on green practices---whether it's utilizing sustainable energy, providing recycling bins in every room, or having biodegradable utensilware in re:fuel!

And speaking of trendy...as a warm-up to the show itself, we're hosting an open model search for SEMPER Fashion's eco-fashion show!

The oldest fashion event production company in Portland, SEMPER's famous for their dedication to eco-friendly shows. One of our prime mottos at aloft is "sassy, savvy space", and SEMPER's awesome efforts represent the ultimate meeting of 'sassy' and 'savvy' :)

Hey. :)

You seem like you could be a NW native...are ya? If not, where are you from?
Where I'm from depends on what period of my life we’re talking about. First, Austin, Texas; lived in quite a few places in Oregon for most of my you rebellious angst years. I then lived in Osaka, Japan for a while and I’ve called Portland my home for the last 3 years. I’ve been very nomadic.

Awesome...so what led ya to settle here?

Music. You can’t go 5 minutes here without meeting another musician, so it made sense to live here and try to start something up with likeminded people. I’ve always had a lot of connections, family and friends in the area as well. I’ve somehow adapted to love the rain and weather here in the Pacific Northwest as well. This city is still small enough to be clean, beautiful, and relaxing yet big enough to find plenty to do. Plus, if I get tired of the city, I can always go an hour in any direction and see something totally different.

So, while not precisely a PDX native, definitely at home here :) Any great food spots you've found since settling in?
Saburo Sushi off SE Bybee and Milwaukie is hands down the best sushi in town! They have the largest sashimi slices I’ve ever seen. You’ve got to get there early, it’s a hole in the wall and the line starts around the block by 5:00. Syun, on 209 NE Lincoln St in Hillsboro is the best all around Japanese (Izakaya Style) food I’ve had in Oregon. Jade Teahouse off SE 13th has the best Udon I’ve had. I love any of the places off 82nd Ave for some Vietnamese Pho. The food carts off SE 12th and Hawthorne are open pretty late. It’s always nice to get a Crepe, Burrito, or Southern Food at 3am with the shifts I work. I could go on and on about food.

Wow, great list---all pretty genuine Portland spots, too. You mentioned that you came to Portland for its (famous) music---any highlights there?

Some good music venues would be Dante’s, The Roseland, Berbati’s, and The Crystal Ballroom; all within walking distance off W. Burnside. Ash Street Saloon on SW Ash St. always has a band to see for cheap. The other real hotspots I like to keep secret.

Those are all great, so those even more secret spots must be pretty amazing.

Speaking of great spots: any travel destinations outside of Portland you love?
As you probably can guess, Japan. You just can’t get bored there. I like the mass craziness of their sleepless cities as well as the quaint peacefulness of the country side. The food is amazing as well. I would like to visit the Middle East someday as well.

Sweet. So, after all that array of cool...what's the coolest moment you've had working here? (We're a pretty neat spot ourselves, after all :D)

So far, the coolest moment I’ve had here was with a guest who brought an exotic pet called a Sugar Glider. A kind of small gliding marsupial that looks like a flying squirrel with a monkeys tail. It was probably the cutest animal on the planet.

Wow, very close by, then! So, with all that experience you've built here...any insider tips on a great local hot spot?
Edgefield! The wine is amazing, you can wander around for hours and look at all the different buildings, and still not see everything it has to offer. Edgefield rocks my socks off!

Great minds think alike---Edgefield's my favorite, too :) Good eats and gorgeous grounds, for sure.

Since you clearly have a good eye...any travel spots you've been to that you recommend?
Mt. Hood!! I am a snow bum so this is my favorite spot when I get away and have some fun and excitement.

Awesome---and also close by! You know a good place when you see it :)
Yeah! I have lived here all my life and I'm not planning on leaving. This awesome state has everything...the mountain in my backyard, open my front door and you have weird Portland looking right at you, then you just do a hop+skip and you are at our breathtaking coast! It's flippin' awesome :)

Darn straight! And speaking of flippin' awesome...what's a memorable moment you've had here at the aloft? :)
One time, I was in the back office sending out a fax for one of our regular guests, and when I came back he had covered my computer terminal in decorative post-its, and taped up the top of it. It took forever to get it off, but it was hilarious!

Hahaha. Yeah, have to love our regulars...and seeing how we're consistently a leader in return business, they love us back for sure :)

Currently on display in our re:mix lounge is the impressive oil imagery of Diana Crites. Insightful and intricate, her works inspect themes including peace, chaos, perspective, and faith while engaging the imagination with a healthy dose of surreality.

These really are intruiging works worth a good look, so come swing by with a friend, and investigate the ideas they hold for yourself :)

sweet sounds: luscious jackson

This edition of sweet sounds looks at a band that fits right in with our lively libations at W XYZ: Luscious Jackson!

My sweet sounds features have so far featured current bands, but in this case we have a golden 90's standout. An all-female band out of New York City, Luscious Jackson included a former drummer of the Beastie Boys (yes, the Beastie Boys had a female drummer) and derived their name from former 70's NBA player Lucious Jackson.

Bringing a unique style of retro-alternative-pop the to 90's scene, the band turned out three albums and a consistent swing of hits, everything from "Here" to "Naked Eye". A few tracks from off the albums can be heard on a regular basis here, including the edgier tunes "Mood Swing" and "Why Do I Lie?", making vocalist Jill Cuniff's voice an unusual highlight of the aloft lineup.

Going full-bore with the Luscious Jackson and Jill Cunniff spirit, Cunniff's fresh new solo work gets quite a bit of play here, as well, with "New York City Boy" wafting in from her City Beach...pay it a visit on her Myspace :)

Keep your ears peeled for all these tunes, and check out the rest of Luscious Jackson's work streaming free at their Myspace page. They're a great gem with a vibe all their own...just like the aloft :)

sweet sounds: Grizzly Bear!

It's time for another swing into the sweet sounds of the spaces here at aloft Portland, and for this edition we have the rising folk-rock stars Grizzly Bear!

Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Grizzly Bear are part of an increasing tide of indie folk rock to hit the mainstream airwaves as of late. Along with other talented groups (such as local stars Blitzen Trapper and Seattle's Fleet Foxes), Grizzly Bear has gotten their also-woodsy name out there and garnered wide acclaim in the process.

Some of that acclaim has been local, with noted radio DJ Greg Glover of 94.7 Alternative Portland selecting Grizzly Bear's album "Veckatimest" as one of this Top 40 albums of 2009, for his "left of the dial" Bottom Forty program.

Grizzly Bear puts in their "Two Weeks" here on a regular basis, with their Beach Boys-esque harmonic hit frequently catching the ear of our mix-and-minglers in re:mix and W XYZ. Also a favorite of our savvy mixologist Larry, Grizzly Bear represent some of the absolute latest of great to be hitting the music scene.

As part of aloft's continuing "see green" spirit, we here at the aloft Portland embrace composting and biodegradable materials! That even inlcudes our silverware---or taterware, if you will. Made from potato, our forks, knives and spoons in re:fuel can join the remains of your salad or burrito in the compost bin, nibbling away at the environmental impact our property has on lovely Oregon :)

One of Portland's greatest hallmarks is its urban parks---and with the MAX light rail just a hop-and-a-skip out our door, easy access to them is all yours!

Today, we take a look at two of the famous Pearl District's shining highlights: Jamison Square and Tanner Springs Park! Each offers a taste of the Portland vibe in its own unique way...

Jamison Square

The more urban of the two, Jamison Square is a lovely patch of city zen. A famous rock fountain---with a 'tidal pool' that kids love to play in---traverses its width, and a number of interesting art pieces mix-and-mingle with fresh grass, and array of trees, and even a delectable french restaurant (Fenouil) to create a complete experience.

Situated right in the heart of the Pearl District (with stylish condo towers all around), Jamison Square's got your dose of Portland's hip urban style :)

Tanner Springs Park

If you're looking for a unique respite from all that urban Pearl style, though, look no further than Tanner Springs Park, only one block north of Jamison Square. Tanner Springs presents an interesting contrast---versus Jamison's stone-built peace, the heart of Tanner Springs is composed entirely of native plants, recreating the riverside of old. Earthen paths lead you into a pad of wafting reeds, and to a pond brimming with fish species.

Situated within one city block, Tanner Springs has a power all its own to transport and relax you without miles of hiking to get away. Portland (and Oregon) embrace their natural spirit, and nothing calls to that in the city more than Tanner Springs. It has its share of art and architecture, as well, striking an interesting balance.

Once you've refreshed yourself with the park's unique natural touch, there's plenty of great dining with a few blocks---including custom gelato shakes across the street at the charming Via Delizia! :)

To reach both parks from the aloft Portland, catch a MAX Red Line train to downtown, and get off at Galleria/SW 10th (about 40 minutes). Hop on the bright-and-happy Portland Streetcar heading north, and get off directly adjacent to Jamison Square at 10th and Johnson, or Tanner Springs Park at 10th and Northrup (either being ~10-11 minutes).

To return, catch the southbound streetcar on 11th, getting off at Taylor and walking a block north-and-east to the eastbound Red Line MAX stop at Yamhill and 10th, by the Central Library :)

tuesday trivia nights with shanrock's trivology!

Every Tuesday night starting at 9pm, Shanrock's famous trivia tomfoolery swings into W XYZ!

Shanrock trivia jock Kyle brings his boisterous brand of jolly quizzery here weekly, with sweet prizes always in tow! Setting up shop in W XYZ, seven quick rounds of knowledge+energy ensue, lighting up the lounge here with laughs and good cheer. Getting more popular by the week, guests+visitors alike get drawn to the fray, often coming away with great loot.

So, grab some friends (or tackle things solo), warm up with some lively libations from our mixologists, and swing into trivia action and win the day! :)

Update: Correction regarding our trusty trivia jock---I had been under the impression that Kyle and Shanrock were one in the same, which they are not. Confusion corrected! :)
